Picture Day: May 15

Hello Parents,

Everyone should have received a note from your child’s teacher letting you know this Wednesday, May 15th will be picture day at the school. The photo package will include prints in the following sizes: one 8×10, two 5×7, and eight wallets. Remember to get your kids excited for their photos by practicing their perfect smiles today and tomorrow, so they’ll be ready when the photographer says “Cheese!”

Papel Picado Craft

Hello Parents,

Whether you are celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a party or not, here is a great craft you can do with the kids – Cinco de Mayo Party Favor Bags: Papel Picado from the blog, Inspired by Familia.

If you’re not familiar with the Mexican paper craft, here is a little excerpt from Wikipedia on what “Papel Picado” is.

Papel picado (“perforated paper”) is a decorative craft made out of paper cut into elaborate designs. Although it is a Mexican folk art, papel picado is used as a holiday decoration in many countries. The designs are commonly cut from tissue paper using a guide and small chisels, creating as many as forty banners at a time. Papel picado can also be made by folding tissue paper and using small, sharp scissors. Common themes includes birds, floral designs, and skeletons. They are commonly displayed for both secular and religious occasions, such as Easter, Christmas, the Day of the Dead, as well as during weddings, quinceañeras, baptisms, and christenings. In Mexico, papel picado is especially incorporated into altars during the Day of the Dead.

Straight from Inspired by Familia‘s post, here is the info on details and instructions you need to make the Papel Picado this weekend (or any time you’re feeling festive!):

tissue paper
paper bags
scissors
glue

1. First figure out how wide and long you will need your papel picado.  That is how long and wide you will cut your strip of tissue paper.

2. Then fold it in half twice.

3. Then add the following template with a marker on one side of your rectangle.

4. You will cut around the parts you drew in.  The ovals in the middle I folded the paper in half over the oval and cut around it.

There you have it, beautiful paper crafts that are easy and fun to make with the kids.

FELIZ CINCO DE MAYO WEEKEND!
